Quality Characteristics and Applications of Polyester Sewing Thread

Sewing thread is an essential auxiliary material in garment and knitting production, which directly affects the sewing quality and service life of garments. Sewing threads are divided into three categories by raw materials: natural fiber, synthetic fiber and blended fiber. Made of polyester fiber, polyester sewing thread stands out as a mainstream thread in the textile industry due to its excellent performance and wide adaptability.

I. Core Quality Characteristics of Polyester Sewing Thread

Sewability is the core indicator for evaluating polyester sewing thread quality. It refers to the ability of the thread to sew smoothly, form neat stitches, and maintain stable mechanical properties during long-term use. Sewability directly determines production efficiency, sewing effect and garment durability. In accordance with national standards, polyester sewing threads are classified into three grades: first-class, second-class and defective products.

Polyester sewing thread has prominent advantages: high strength and toughness with low breakage and pilling risks; excellent wear resistance and aging resistance to withstand repeated washing and friction; low shrinkage rate and good heat resistance without deformation or wrinkling after sewing, making it ideal for processing various conventional garments.

II. Selection Principles of Polyester Sewing Thread

Proper thread selection maximizes product performance and guarantees garment quality, following four core principles:

1. Fabric Compatibility Principle

The thread’s properties including shrinkage rate, wear resistance and heat resistance shall match the fabric’s characteristics, avoiding garment shrinkage, wrinkling and uneven stitches caused by performance differences.

2. Garment Adaptation Principle

Conventional polyester sewing threads apply to ordinary garments. High-elastic ductile threads are used for stretch apparel. Protective garments such as fire-fighting and outdoor clothing adopt functional polyester threads with flame retardant, heat-resistant and waterproof properties.

3. Stitch Coordination Principle

Threads are selected according to sewing techniques and garment positions: fluffy threads for overlocking, high-ductility threads for double-needle sewing, high-strength threads for stress-bearing parts such as shoulder and crotch seams, and wear-resistant threads for exposed stitches to prevent cracking and loosening.

4. Quality and Price Matching Principle

Thread grade shall match garment grade. High-end garments adopt premium first-class threads for fine workmanship and durability, while mid and low-end garments use cost-effective conventional threads to balance quality and production cost.

III. Main Applications of Polyester Sewing Thread

Polyester sewing thread features versatile applications. Conventional types are widely used for sewing daily products such as garments, underwear and home textiles made of cotton, chemical fiber and blended fabrics. Modified functional types apply to stretch apparel, protective clothing, shoes and bags. It is also commonly used for processing various fabric ornaments and knitting accessories.
