1. Common sizes explained
40/2 polyester sewing thread: 40/2 means two plies of 40s yarn twisted together. With a moderate diameter and good strength, it is suitable for general garment sewing — shirts, T-shirts and light to medium-weight fabrics. It is one of the highest-volume sizes on the market.
40/3 polyester sewing thread: 40/3 means three plies of 40s yarn twisted together. Compared with 40/2, it has a thicker diameter and higher strength, making it suitable for denim, heavy fabrics, bags and other products that need higher seam strength.
20/2 polyester sewing thread: 20/2 means two plies of 20s yarn twisted together. The yarn is thicker and stronger, suitable for heavy-duty sewing such as thick fabrics, footwear, tents and canvas.
20/3 polyester sewing thread: 20/3 means three plies of 20s yarn twisted together. It is one of the thickest and strongest sizes, suitable for sewing extremely heavy fabrics such as heavy canvas and industrial textiles.
2. How to choose the right size
Choose by fabric weight: for light fabrics we recommend 40/2, for medium-heavy fabrics 40/3, for thick fabrics 20/2, and for extra-thick fabrics 20/3. Choose by seam strength: for normal garments 40/2 is enough, while high-strength seams call for 40/3 or 20/2.
